[It wasn't the best place to spend the night but Joel knew that they would have to make do with what they have. The last town they passed was miles behind them, and they hadn't come across any place they could use as a makeshift shelter. If there was one thing he was glad about, it was that the weather had been kind enough to keep the skies clear that night.

He wasn't asleep, not yet, too busy keeping an ear out for any danger that could approach them at any moment. But all he heard for a good, long while was the sound of crackling wood from the slowly dying campfire nearby.

At least until Ellie decided to open her mouth.

He shifts his position, crossing an arm behind his head, his eyes still remaining closed.]

It's definitely goin' to be some night if you keep talking like that.

[He doesn't sound too irritated as he says it, but he did wish that she would use what little down time they had to rest up.]

[Wow. All she said was two words, fuck.

Even if no irritation shows in his voice just yet, Ellie gets the feeling she's pushing her luck a bit. Which is okay, because she does that all the time anyway. She does lower her voice though -- as if that would help.

Pffft.]

I'm just killing some time until I pass out. [You can practically hear the pout in her voice, but she shrugs it off quickly, for what it's worth. She doesn't exactly want to be babied here.] ...Fucking takes too long sometimes.

[...sigh.]

[Maybe Joel's being a little paranoid, but in his experience, it was always better to be safe than sorry. You never know when Lady Luck will decide to rear its ugly head.

He's quiet for a moment.]

A TV might've help if there was a working one lying around. [It used to put Sarah to sleep... But he doesn't dwell on the memory of his daughter for too long, instead letting out an amused noise.] Except you'd be up watching shows all night, knowing you.

[She's going to latch onto that amused tone of voice for all it's worth, Joel; and she lets out a bit of a grin herself, as she casually stretches.]

You say it like there's something wrong with that.

[...She thinks about it a little more. The more she does, the more she wishes they had one, so she sounds a bit defeated as she entertains the idea.]

...We'd need to plug it in somewhere, though. Plus, I dunno... you think the noise would be too much?

Tommy's place might've been perfect for that.

[He turns from his side, lying on his back.]

If they had a couple of working headphones, you would've been all set.

Guess no matter how far you go, you never really forget family. Ellie sort of lets the name sink in for a bit as she takes in his words, but then her tone is playful again.]

But then you wouldn't be able to watch with me.

[Or more accurately, he wouldn't be able to hear anything...]

I'll live. [A sigh escapes his lips as he finally opens eyes to stare at the heavens above. He never thought that old saying of missing things only when they're gone would be true.] It's been a long time since I've watched anything on TV, but I won't be missing much.

[A pause.]

Probably wouldn't have to worry about the noise too much at Tommy's though.

[Ellie isn't totally convinced. There's definitely something of a nostalgic tone in the way he talks, like he does miss it, even if he's saying the opposite. If she had to guess, she'd say it's something he used to do with Sarah a lot.

But fuck if she's opening that can of worms again any time soon.

Instead, she manages a small nostalgic smile of her own.]

Yeah, guess not. [...She still has no regrets coming with Joel. None. She felt safer with him around, but... well --] They have a pretty sweet gig set up, don't they?

They sure did. That place was a paradise compared to the rest of the world.

[He was a little envious of his younger brother. Unlike him, it looked like Tommy had really gotten his life together after they had parted ways.]

Wouldn't have believed it if we didn't see it. Kinda makes you wonder how long it took for them to get everything set up.

[Now that she's so far away, Ellie can safely admit that she misses the place. But she certainly doesn't regret leaving, so hopefully Joel doesn't take it that way.

Giving up that safe haven was surprisingly easy, because... well, being with Joel sort of felt like that anyway. He'd protect her. He wouldn't leave like so many others have. And right now, she'd rather have that permanence.]

[After a pause, she shakes herself out of her thoughts, though. She definitely isn't getting any sleepier.]

But hey, it's cool. We've got something pretty fuckin' sweet going ourselves. Plus, we've got Callus.

[Who totally isn't dead or eaten yet. Fuck you, David.]

...Wonder if he misses 'em, too.

[If he was bothered by what Ellie said, he makes no indication of it.]

There wouldn't have been much point even if we did ask.

[He repeats the horse's name, his tone full of derision.]

Callus. Couldn't you have picked a better name for it? It just sounds like some kind of infection or disease.

What the hell is the point of living in a world like this, anyway? She ponders on the words, trying to think positively: like hey, at least traveling with Joel hasn't been the worst ever.

She scoffs a little, though, making a noise when he pokes fun at the horse's name again. It isn't the first time she's heard it.]

Well, I didn't hear you making any suggestions. If you got something better, let's hear it.
